What age is a good age to begin lessons?

We like students not younger than 8 years old however at the request of many the fencing center offers an Introduction to Fencing Class for the curious little Musketeers.

How does one join the Fencing Center?

Call and make an appointment for Orientation. After taking a look at what it is we do, you or your child are welcome to sign up for classes. Note: At certain times some membership categories are frozen, and we begin a waiting list. You will be informed of this when you call to make an appointment. Classes will be limited to 10-12 per class.

Does one need to be a member in order to take lessons at the Fencers Club?

Yes, membership is mandatory but only after completion of the Intro to Fencing Class or Women’s Fencing/Fitness Class.

What does membership cover?

Your membership fees allow you to fence and take classes/lessons at the Fencing Center. Coaching fees at tournaments are extra. Only members are allowed into the General Fencing Classes, Competition Group Classes and Advanced Instruction. We are open 5 days a week, and you have unlimited access to the fencing center and of course membership includes a Portland Fencing Center patch.

How do I pick a weapon for my Fencer?

The Fencing Center begins all fencers with Foil. Temperament will often dictate the weapon choice after Foil study. Some fencers after foil study will try both Saber and Epee’ to get a taste of the differences. Speaking to the coach or others is also a great way to proceed. They can help guide you.

How much are group and private lessons?

Refer to the Classes and  Fees page of the website.

What do I do about equipment?

The Fencing Center provides equipment for the Intro to Fencing and Women’s Fitness/Fencing Class after that if you have found fencing to be a fit for you there will be someone to help you with the purchase of equipment. PFC also has rental equipment available.

Is the Fencing Center only for experienced fencers?

No, the Fencing Center serves the entire spectrum of fencers. Our members range from 7 to 107 years, with varying abilities.

Can I pay a floor fee and fence at the Fencers Club?

Yes, at this time you can pay a floor fee of $20 to attend an open fencing night as long as you are a USFA member. It is however more economical to have a membership unless it is a sporadic drop in.
