Frequently Asked Questions
What age is a good age to begin lessons?
We generally do not take students younger than 10 years old. However, the fencing center does offer an Introduction to Fencing Class for the curious little Musketeers.
How do I join the Fencing Center?
Call and make an appointment for
Orientation. After taking a look at what it is we do, you or your child are welcome to sign up for classes. Note: At certain times some membership categories are frozen, and we begin a waiting list. You will be informed of this when you call to make an appointment. Classes will be limited to 10-12 per class.
Do I need to be a member in order to take lessons at the Fencing Center?
Yes, United States Fencing Association membership is mandatory to take lessons.
Portland Fencing Center membership is mandatory after completion of introductory classes.
What does membership cover?
Your membership fees allow you to fence and take classes/lessons at the Fencing Center. Coaching fees at tournaments are extra. Only members are allowed into the General Fencing Classes, Competition Group Classes and Advanced Instruction. We are open 5 days a week, and you have unlimited access to the fencing center. And of course, membership includes a Portland Fencing Center patch.
How do I pick a weapon for my Fencer?
The Fencing Center begins all fencers with foil. Temperament will often dictate the weapon choice after foil study. Some fencers will go on to try both saber and epee to get a taste of the differences. Speaking to the coach or others is also a great way to proceed. They can help guide you.
How much are group and private lessons?
