A first tournament can be very traumatic. But it doesn't have to be. And it shouldn't be. It had better be a real experience, full of feeling and honest self appraisal. And don't forget to have a good time.

Sport fencing is growing rapidly in popularity in New England just as it is all over the country. As a result, there are now a number of clubs holding tournaments at various sites around the region, and members of the Portland Fencing Club manage to find themselves at many of them.

On this page are directions and contact information for the many area sites at which fencing tournaments are held. 

 

Eastern Maine Technical College, Johnston Gym - Bangor, Maine

I-95, North or South: Take exit 49 (Hogan Road). From the exit ramp head toward Bangor and car dealerships (from the South: right off ramp, from North, left off ramp). Go 1/4 mile down Hogan Road, and across from the "Saturn" car dealership. Take a right into the Eastern Maine Technical College entrance. Follow the driveway up the hill and bear left (you will see "Great Skates" on the right). At the top of the hill, make a right turn into an adjacent parking lot (the lot has a pedestrian stop sign there and sign - "All deliveries"), and go straight through the parking lot and follow the road until you see the Johnston Gymnasium on the left (directly across from the soccer fields). Parking is around the gymnasium.


Seacoast Fencing Club, Manchester, NH

From I-293 in Manchester:  Take exit 4 Queen City Bridge, turn right at exit, and right at the lights onto Queen City Avenue.  Go across bridge and turn left onto Elm Street.  Turn right onto Valley Street (across from Dunkin Donuts) go about a mile, and turn right on Wilson Street.  (at Hoitt Furniture Store)  SFC is the second building on the left.

Concord Fencing Club, Concord, NH

Take I-93 North to Exit 13. At end of ramp make left on to Manchester Street. At first traffic light take left on to Hall Street. Go one mile to the Concord Business Center on the right. Enter the Business Center and at the Stop sign zig-zag right and then left. CFC is on the left, 126D


Boston Fencing Club - Waltham, MA

Located at the Academy of Fencing, 110-2 Clematis Avenue, Waltham, MA 02154

From North: take 95 South to Trapelo Road exit, left at end of exit, stay on Trapelo Road ( a few miles) until you come to Waverly, take a right on Waverly (you should pass Yolanda's). At next intersection, take a left onto Beaver. Go over railroad tracks, take next left onto Clematis. Follow Clematis until you come to Antico Industrial park sign, take immediate right and drive behind building. BFC building is in the back. From Old 125 Walnut St Location: Take a left onto Walnut Street. At end go left onto Mt. Auburn. Go left off Mt auburn onto Summer St (before Watertown Sq). Follow Summer to end, take a left, the right at the light onto Main St. Follow Main St to Waltham line, then take a left onto Warren St (Next to John Brewer's restaurant). follow Warren around to the right, then take a left onto Beaver, Clematis is on the right. Follow Clematis until you come to Antico Industrial park sign, take immediate right and drive behind building. BFC building is in the back.


UNH Whittemore Center & Hamel Rec Ctr - Durham, NH

From All Points: Take US Rt. 4 to Rt. 155A. Head towards the University for 1 1/4 miles and turn left just past New Hampshire Hall (a brick building on the left). Park behind New Hampshire Hall. Fencing is in the Whittemore Center, a large concrete and glass sports complex. Use the main entrance.


Amoskeag Fencing Center - Nashua, NH

From Rt. 3: Take Exit 6 (Broad Street). From the South turn left at the top of ramp, from the North turn right. Broad Street merges into Rt. 101A. Make a right on Main Street. Cross bridge and make a right onto Water Street at Darrel's Music Hall, merge right onto Factory Street and go head straight in to parking lot. Once in to the lot, go to the door on the left of the building in the alley. Go to the 4th floor. (No Elevator).



Fort Knox - Prospect, Maine

From South or West (Southern ME, NH, or Augusta): From I-95 North: Take Augusta / Winthrop Exit 30 onto Rt. 202 East. Go through Augusta, around 1st rotary, then over river bridge, and around 2nd rotary and take Rt. 3 East. Proceed toward Belfast (48 mi). Follow Rt. 3 to coastal Rt. 1, and follow the directions below.

From Coastal Rt. 1: Go north on Rt. 1 (approx. 15 mi) toward Bucksport (you will go through Searsport and Stockton Springs. Stay to right on Rt. 1 (and DO NOT take Rt. 1A to Bangor) until you come to a large bridge over the Penobscot River. Just before the bridge, make a left onto Rt. 174. Fort Knox is 500 ft down on the right side.

From Northern Maine, Bangor, or north of Augusta: Take I-95 (between Augusta & Bangor, Waterville area to Exit 30 (Augusta / Winthrop). Follow directions above from Exit 30 off I-95.

From I-95 South at Bangor: From Bangor take I-395 East over Penobscot River and take Rt. 15 South to Bucksport. Go South on Rt. 15 (18 mi)into Bucksport. Make a right at stop light (Irving Gas Station) onto Coastal Rt. 1. Go over causeway bridge, then over large bridge over the Penobscot river. Immediately after large bridge, make right on Rt. 174. Fort Knox is 500 ft. down on the right side.


Portland Fencing Center, Westbrook, ME

Address: The Dana Warp Mill, 90 Bridge Street
From Maine Turnpike Exit 8: Follow Rt. 25 West towards Westbrook. Pass the MacDonald's; continue on Rt. 25 West/Business district about 2 miles. This bears to the left and becomes Main Street. Make a right on Bridge Street at the CVS Pharmacy. The Dana Warp Mill is on the left. Enter the building through the small green awning in the center building and take stairway to the top floor. For the elevator enter through the handicapped entrance and take it to the top floor. Parking in front of the Mill or on Dana Court in lot on the left.
 


University of New England, Westbrook Campus

Address: Stevens Avenue, Portland, ME
Take the Maine Turnpike to exit #8.  Follow Rt. 25 East about 1.25 miles and turn left on to Woodfords Street, (At Cumberland Farms).  follow Woodfords Street one traffic light and turn left onto Stevens Avenue.  Go approximately one mile and the Westbrook Campus of the University of New England driveway is on the left,  across from St. Joseph's Church.  Parking for the recreation center is on the left.


Proctor Academy, Andover, NH

From the south:
I-93 north to exit 17, Rt. 4 west for 17 miles into Andover.

From the southwest:
North on I-91 to Claremont/Springfield. Follow Rt-11 across to Andover or stay on I-91 to White River Jct.; pick up I-89 south; take exit 11; turn left onto Rt. 11 and follow Rt. 11 east to Andover.

From the northwest:
At White River Jct. get on I-89 south; take exit 11; turn left on Rt. 11 and follow Rt. 11 east to Andover.

From the north:
From Maine, take I-95 south to Portsmouth circle; take Rt. 4 west to Andover.

The Field House, A large brick building is across the street from the large athletic field. Please use parking and entrance around the back.


Mount View High School - Thorndike, Maine

From I-95 (N or S) in Maine: Take exit 35 (Fairfield) onto Rt. 139 East. Follow Rt. 139 East to Unity. Rt. 139 will continue south with Rt. 220 toward Thorndike. Stay on Rt. 220 South through Thorndike, and Mount View HS is past the town on the right. Gym is at the back of the school.

From Bangor: Take Rt. 202/9 west out of Hamden to Unity. Take Rt. 139/220 south (follow above directions). From East/Belfast: Follow Rt. 137 west to Knox Corner, make a right onto Rt. 220 going North about 2 miles. Mount View is on left. Gym is at back of school.
